Garry Davis is a graduate research assistant and the Bryna and Henry David Fellow working on the Central Texas Student Futures Project. He joined the Ray Marshall Center in September 2011. He is a graduate student at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin, focusing on improving productivity across social and economic policies and programs. He expects to complete his Master of Public Affairs degree in May 2013.
Prior to coming to the LBJ School, Davis worked as a Teaching Fellow at Citizen Schools, a nonprofit focusing on education reform, where he contributed to efforts to close the achievement gap for middle school students at Bedichek Middle School. As a Teaching Fellow, he worked with middle school students to maintain or improve their academic achievement and to provide them with college and career connections. The intersection of the two areas is Davis’ specialization. He was responsible for engaging the community and bringing the community into the classroom, in the form of an apprenticeship program, a hands-on 10-week program taught by volunteer professionals. Davis was responsible for volunteer recruitment, training, and support for staff and volunteers throughout the apprenticeship process.
Before working at Citizen Schools, Davis served as an operations associate in the Resource Development Department of the United Way of the Capital Area. He also held an internship with the Capital Area Food Bank in the volunteer management department.
Davis holds a bachelor of science in Communication Studies and a Professional Business Foundations Certificate from the University of Texas at Austin.
